The electronic 'nose' that can sniff out lung cancer: New breathalyser test could allow doctors to detect the disease in early stages
The test contains a chip that can distinguish tumours from healthy tissue
It can even tell how advanced the cancer is and what sub-type it is
It works by detecting volatile organic compounds produced by tumours
Lung cancer kills more people than breast, colon and pancreatic cancer combined - this is largely because it is hard to diagnose in the early stages

52,000 cancer cases a year are spotted too late: Delays blamed on 'stiff upper lip' mentality and pressure on GPs not to refer patents for costly tests
Lung cancer is most likely to be spotted late – with fewer than 1 in 4 cases caught early
46% of cancers in England are diagnosed at an advanced stage
