DLA (15th Nov 11 at 12:30pm UTC)
The Minister for the disabled in the Con/dem government Maria Miller has stated that DLA

(Disability Living Allowance) is unsustainable in it's present form, so consultation

is taking place to replace it wit PIP ( Personal Independence Payment)

http://www.dwp.gov.uk/newsroom/press-releases/2010/dec-2010/dwp171-10-061210.shtml

The consultation process is now under way until February 2011 on the link

http://www.dwp.gov.uk/consultations/2010/dla-reform.shtml as a Disability Living Allowance reform PDF for anybody interested in knowing what the future plans are or having any input into it.

The budget statement of June 2010 http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/junebudget_easyread.htm gives on page 33 a commitment to reform DLA (Disability Living Allowance) with independent objective medical assessment so that it is only paid as long as necessary, phased in during 2013 to 14.

The Budget Costings document sets out how the savings are to be made towards the end of the second chapter

http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/junebudget_costings.htm of this down load able PDF document , a reduction in claimants of around 20% of current levels depending on how much error and fraud reduction the DWP is able to achieve.

I have tried to guide people to the relevant sections in the interests of clarity but the source documents are there for the more adventurous.

More information to help with understanding a very complex issue, this is Maria Millers speech to Parliament,

http://www.theyworkforyou.com/wms/?id=2010-12-06a.9WS.1 as you can see the rising case load and expenditure is something which is deemed necessary of reform, children and over 65's(Attendance Allowance) claimant eligibility criteria and the new objective assessment ( possibly similar to those carried out by ATOS Health Care on behalf of the Department of Work and Pensions) to decide who has the greatest need.

Delivery of this benefit would be influenced by it's ability to return people to employment,

http://research.dwp.gov.uk/asd/asd5/rports2009-2010/rrep648.pdf the section 2.2 on page 26 should help clarify this matter for the avoidance of doubt.

looks like a rocky time and items in the Daily Mail about living on benefits should not be a "life style choice" do nothing to make me think any differently.

This link takes you to the governments response to the consultation on DLA reform, quite a lengthy piece of reading but worth while if you have an interest in the subject.

http://www.dwp.gov.uk/docs/dla-reform-response.pdf

Judge for yourselves how much they have listened to consultation.
