Read that this morning somewhere on the web. I really cannot see it making much difference. If people want to smoke - and that includes youngsters - they will and they will know where to buy them. Certainly when I was a smoker, the advertising had no effect on me whatsoever.

Exactly the same for me. I didn't see an advert and think "I must buy them". I bought what I enjoyed.
British American Tobacco seemed to think it was important enough to throw money at keeping the status quo and it costs nothing to implement, so see no reason not to do it.

The number of smokers has been decreasing, but a third of Europeans still smoke. Many cancers, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are linked to tobacco use. It is the largest avoidable health risk in Europe, causing more problems than alcohol, drugs, high blood pressure, excess weight or high cholesterol.
Every year in the EU, as many as 650 000 Europeans die prematurely of tobacco-related causes – more than the populations of Malta or Luxembourg (WHO source). It is estimated that, in terms of negative economic impact, smoking costs the EU countries at least €100 billion.

Smoke free http://mediacentre.dh.gov.uk/2011/12/28/100-days-until-end-o f-tobacco-displays/
From 6 April 2012, large shops will no longer be able to display tobacco products to the public except on certain occasions, for instance when staff are serving customers or when they are carrying out stock control or cleaning.
Customers will still be able to buy cigarettes in the usual way but the Government is ending tobacco displays to protect young people who are often the target of tobacco promotion. Ending open cigarette displays will help people trying to quit smoking and help to change attitudes and social norms around smoking.
Removing permanent tobacco displays is one initiative among many being delivered to help to reduce smoking uptake by young people and to support adult smokers who want to quit. The Government’s commitment to these aims is set out in Healthy Lives, Healthy People: A Tobacco Control Plan for England (published 9 March 2011).
Smaller shops will not have to cover up their cigarettes and tobacco products until 6 April 2015.

I despair sometimes (most of the time to be honest!) but how is going to hide cigarettes going to stop people smoking?? Did prohibition stop Americans drinking? They need to get in touch with the real world and they also need to do something about the consumption of alcohol, which probably kills more people. Thinking crime and car accidents and the like.
You should know by now not to think logically Sue.

Revision of the Tobacco Products Directive
More than ten years have passed since the adoption of the Tobacco Products Directive. During this time, there have been several market, scientific and international developments in the tobacco sector and the existing rules present a number of weaknesses, gaps and loopholes. Therefore it has become necessary to update and complete the current Directive. A revision was repeatedly called for by the Council and the European Parliament.
While the overall objective of the revision is to improve the functioning of the internal market, it is expected that citizens in all Member States will benefit from improved public health.
The revision addresses the following main issues:
how to regulate products which do not contain tobacco, but which are closely linked to smoking or tobacco consumption, for example electronic- and herbal cigarettes,
labelling and packaging of tobacco products
additives, such as flavourings, used in tobacco products,
internet sales of tobacco products and
tracking and tracing of these products

Tobacco brief sees ABPI drop Luther Pendragon PharmaTimes - Ben Adams
The UK pharma group the ABPI have dropped their PR firm Luther Pendragon after it emerged that the firm was working for a tobacco firm.
Luther Pendragon had been working on a brief with the tobacco company Phillip Morris since July last year to help the firm lobby against using plain packaging for cigarettes.
The ABPI, recognising that this is an anathema to what their members do, told PharmaTimes UK news: “As soon as the ABPI learnt in December last year that Luther Pendragon had taken the decision to work for a tobacco company, we served notice and MHP Mandate were appointed to provide public affairs support.”
But the PR firm is now reported to have dropped Phillip Morris, with The Royal Pharmaceutical Society head of public affairs Charles Willis telling PRWeek: “Luther Pendragon have confirmed that they are no longer working with Phillip Morris International.
“We are happy with this response and with the work Luther Pendragon have carried out with us. The work that Luther has carried out for their other clients has not conflicted with the joint work between Luther and RPS.”
This all came to light after an editorial in the Lancet publicly criticised the firm for its client, and named both the ABPI and the RPS in its piece, urging them to both drop the PR firm.
In the UK, Luther Pendragon’s clients have also included the Department of Health, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Air Products, the All Party Pharmacy Group, the Association of Optometrists, the Federation of Ophthalmic and Dispensing Opticians, the National Pharmacy Association, NHS Skills for Health, and St George's Healthcare NHS Trust.
Philip Morris has been listed as a Luther Pendragon client on the APPC lobby register since 1 June 2012, but said it is no longer receiving consultancy services from Luther Pendragon

Coalition must act on cigarette packaging
On 5 March the secretary of state for health published his call to action on reducing premature mortality. This correctly identified tobacco use as the biggest single behavioural risk factor for premature death and included a commitment to decide whether to introduce standardised packaging, as recommended by health organisations he consulted, including signatories to this letter (Report, 17 April). But with the Queen's speech only two weeks away, we have yet to hear of any such decision. The arguments in favour of standardised packaging are compelling and we have yet to see any credible evidence from the tobacco industry against legislation. This has clearly been recognised by public health minister Anna Soubry MP, who made clear her support for standardised packaging of tobacco products on the Today programme last Friday.
Tobacco, unlike other causes of disease, has a global and powerful industry promoting its interests. JTI Gallaher, maker of Camel, is spending over £2m on its campaign against standard packs, running ads that have been ruled misleading by advertising watchdog the Advertising Standards Authority. With over 200,000 young people taking up smoking every year and 100,000 people dying as a result of their habit, we urgently need assurances from Jeremy Hunt that he will listen to health experts and stand firm against this industry pressure. It will take a lot of explanation if this crucial public health measure is not included in the Queen's speech on 8 May.
