Read that this morning somewhere on the web. I really cannot see it making much difference. If people want to smoke - and that includes youngsters - they will and they will know where to buy them. Certainly when I was a smoker, the advertising had no effect on me whatsoever.

Exactly the same for me. I didn't see an advert and think "I must buy them". I bought what I enjoyed. {Smile}

British American Tobacco seemed to think it was important enough to throw money at keeping the status quo and it costs nothing to implement, so see no reason not to do it. {Cool}

John Dalli Commissioner for Health Strengthening EU legislation on tobacco products High-level conference on pictorial health warnings and standardised packaging for tobacco products Brussels, 29 February 2012

http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=SPEECH/12/140&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN

The number of smokers has been decreasing, but a third of Europeans still smoke. Many cancers, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are linked to tobacco use. It is the largest avoidable health risk in Europe, causing more problems than alcohol, drugs, high blood pressure, excess weight or high cholesterol.

Every year in the EU, as many as 650 000 Europeans die prematurely of tobacco-related causes – more than the populations of Malta or Luxembourg (WHO source). It is estimated that, in terms of negative economic impact, smoking costs the EU countries at least €100 billion.

I was in Tesco earlier and this is how their cigarette display is now.

It's all spring loaded sliding doors. As soon as you let go it closes. {Shocked}

Smoke free http://mediacentre.dh.gov.uk/2011/12/28/100-days-until-end-of-tobacco-displays/

From 6 April 2012, large shops will no longer be able to display tobacco products to the public except on certain occasions, for instance when staff are serving customers or when they are carrying out stock control or cleaning.

Customers will still be able to buy cigarettes in the usual way but the Government is ending tobacco displays to protect young people who are often the target of tobacco promotion. Ending open cigarette displays will help people trying to quit smoking and help to change attitudes and social norms around smoking.

Removing permanent tobacco displays is one initiative among many being delivered to help to reduce smoking uptake by young people and to support adult smokers who want to quit. The Government’s commitment to these aims is set out in Healthy Lives, Healthy People: A Tobacco Control Plan for England (published 9 March 2011).

Smaller shops will not have to cover up their cigarettes and tobacco products until 6 April 2015.

I despair sometimes (most of the time to be honest!) but how is going to hide cigarettes going to stop people smoking?? Did prohibition stop Americans drinking? They need to get in touch with the real world {Angry} and they also need to do something about the consumption of alcohol, which probably kills more people. Thinking crime and car accidents and the like. {Angry}
